“Just do something” by Kevin DeYoung

Proverbs 2:1-15

The Value of Wisdom

[1] My son, if you receive my words
and treasure up my commandments with you,
[2] making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding;
[3] yes, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
[4] if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
[5] then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.
[6] For the LORD gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
[7] he stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
[8] guarding the paths of justice
and watching over the way of his saints.
[9] Then you will understand righteousness and justice
and equity, every good path;
[10] for wisdom will come into your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
[11] discretion will watch over you,
understanding will guard you,
[12] delivering you from the way of evil,
from men of perverted speech,
[13] who forsake the paths of uprightness
to walk in the ways of darkness,
[14] who rejoice in doing evil
and delight in the perverseness of evil,
[15] men whose paths are crooked,
and who are devious in their ways. (ESV)

What does that mean? “From his mouth come knowledge and understanding” What does this phrase mean? I always thought wisdom was more like practical advice that should be sought after outside of the Bible. I never thought of wisdom as something that comes from the mouth of the LORD. But what does the Bible say? The Bible says wisdom is given by God. Specifically wisdom comes from his mouth. That means wisdom is found in the Bible, which is the very word of God written by Holy Spirit inspired human beings. Where should I seek this precious wisdom? From the Bible. What is this wisdom about? It’s about knowing God and fearing God in obedience. True wisdom is always moral. It is not non-moral.

Then who is truly wise person? How do wise people behave? What do they look like? Wise people are not necessarily successful CEOs or professors with great knowledge. Wise people are not rich people or charming celebrities who know how to talk to people and gain their attention. Wise people are those who believe in God and seek first His kingdom and righteousness. Wise people are those who give their ears to the moral law of God and read the Bible day after day, diligently seeking for a close communion with God in Christ. Wise people are those who insist on living righteously no matter what the consequence of that living would be.

  • Wisdom in a biblical sense based on the proverbs
    • Scriptures
    • Counsel with other mature believers
      • Teachability – Are you able to be taught, changed your mind?
    • Praying to God

Why do I keep forgetting that the ultimate satisfaction is found only in close relationship with God? When I truly live according to the Word of God and enjoy His free gifts and overflowing spiritual blessings in Christ? Work, family, and success are all good things but can they really satisfy me? I subjectively feel like that I should have good work, good family, and success to be truly satisfied. However, what does the Bible say? True life, being truly and fully alive, only comes from knowing God and Jesus Christ who God sent (John 14:6). How does Genesis begin? Who created us and who know us better? God is the one who created us and God is the only self-sufficient, truly independent Being who is the fountain of all life. Isn’t it common sense then, that it’s only in God our hearts can rest? Isn’t it obvious and natural that we can find true fulfillment, everlasting joy and pleasure, true acceptance and validation from God? Praise God that He sought me when I was lost.

“So the end of the matter is this: Live for God. Obey the Scriptures. Think of others before yourself. Be holy. Love Jesus. And as you do these things, do whatever else you like, with whomever you like, wherever you like, and you’ll be walking in the will of God.” -Kevin DeYoung
